Cracking the Da Vinci Code

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the Dan Brown novel titled 'Da Vinci Code' which is fast becoming the talk of the town and has gained the reputation
of being one of the greatest conspiracy theories ever. Lets face it.. all of us love a good conspiracy. Whether it be the Apollo landing on the moon, the real hand behind the 9/11 bombing or even the JFK assassination.

However the book in question has made some very serious claims that have not only fuelled the anger of the Catholic Church but have also placed seeds of doubt into the minds of millions as to whether the basic doctrines of the Church are nothing more than a fabrication.

The story starts of with the murder of a museum curator, Jacques Sauniere. A Harvard professor and a cryptologist (who happens to be related to the curator) are commissioned to decipher the clues left behind by Sauniere and they stumble upon a conspiracy which is the truth behind the foundations of the Church and the Holy Grail. The book has been praised for its "impeccable research" and starts off with stating a few facts about the Priory of Sion and the Opus Dei which are meant to lead the reader into believing that the entire work is based on truth and not fiction.

Some of the clams that the Da Vince code makes

  • Jesus' divinity is a false claim that was voted in by the Nicene Council.

  • The Bible is incomplete as Constantine suppressed some documents about Jesus other than those found in our current N.T canon.

  • Jesus Christ was secretly married to Mary Magdalene and they had children.

  • Now these claims are quite bold and if there is even the slightest truth in them....it would shatter the foundation upon which the current church stands firmly.

So let’s have a closer look into what the book claims.

Jesus' divinity is a false claim

An excerpt from The Da Vinci Code...Teabing speaking to Neveu..
"Because Constantine upgraded Jesus’ status almost four centuries after Jesus’ death, thousands of documents already existed chronicling His life as a mortal man. To rewrite the history books, Constantine knew he would need a bold stroke. From this sprang the most profound moment in Christian history. … Constantine commissioned and financed a new Bible, which omitted those gospels that spoke of Christ’s human traits and embellished those gospels that made Him godlike. The earlier gospels were outlawed, gathered up, and burned."

Thus according to Dan, the Bible in its present form only came to exist as late as the 4th century AD prior to which there were several Gnostic gospels which Constantine conveniently disposed off with. The reason for disposing off with these documents?....they showed that Jesus Christ lived and died as nothing but a common man who was "a great and powerful man, but a man nonetheless.”
However many years before the Nicene Council convened, the heretic Marcion argued the Divinity of Jesus Christ by referring to the Gospels that are currently included in the present day bible. If the Divinity of Christ was only voted in the 4th century...how did Marcion ever come up with the idea of Christ's Divinity more than 200 years earlier?

Furthermore, John, a follower of Christ, confirmed the Lord's Divinity in the following passage...
In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. Life itself was in him. So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us (John 1: 1-4, 14, NLT).
This scripture had been dated at 175-225 AD. Thus Christ was clearly revered as God over a hundred years before the Council at Nicaea.

    The Bible is incomplete

The second issue is whether or not the Gnostic gospels are what Teabing claims...gospels which tell us about the life of Christ as a mere mortal.
The Gnostics are people who believe that they have some special hidden knowledge and believe in Salvation through this Knowledge. According to Dan, it was Constantine who branded the Gnostics as heretics at the council however history shows that the bishop Irenaeus condemned the Gnostics around 140 years before the council! Once again Dan hasn’t done his homework properly.

Jesus Christ was secretly married to Mary Magdalene

The third claim which Dan makes is that Jesus Christ took Mary Magdalene as his wife and sired children with her. Furthermore the womb of Mary is presented as the Holy Grail which bore the child who carried on the bloodline of Christ! This claim has to be the juiciest part of the book but like the other claims, is nothing but pure fiction.

There are two ways of looking at this. Firstly, the Gospel of Philip which says that Jesus kissed Mary (which was a common way of greeting one another) was written 150-220 years after Christ and is not historically reliable. This is the only piece of scripture upon which the claim has been fabricated and is very little to base a conspiracy theory upon.

The claim that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene (or to anyone else for that matter) is quite absurd when you think about the purpose for which Jesus came to earth. Jesus came to die, not to procreate like a normal human. Why would he take a wife if He knew before hand that she would be widowed and His child left fatherless?

    1 Corinthians 7:32 says:
'I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife,'

Jesus did not take Mary Magdalene as his wife as His concern was not of the things of this world. His main concern was His ministry and spreading the word of God. He did not take a wife so that He could serve God 'without distraction'.

Further research shows that Leonardo Da Vinci, who is supposedly a member of the Priory of Sion, died 437 years before the priory was founded so it would be little difficult for him to have been one of its more prominent members.

As for the Holy Hrail, Dan has gone to some lengths to prove that it is in fact the womb of Mary and not the chalice which Jesus used at the last supper. He has even claimed that the architecture of several churches are designed to indicate the nether regions of a woman(!) thus indicating the true Holy Grail.

    Conclusion

On the whole the book isn’t that impressive. Apart from the shock which the reader gets from the content of the book, the story flows in an unusual way with Langdon and Neveu solving the hardest of puzzles that the priory members could come up with, with relative ease.
Dan has struck upon a priceless formula here. Write something controversial and guarantee yourself a ticket to fame. And in this book he has certainly touched upon some very sensitive veins i.e. the reputation of the Vatican and the Deity of Christ.

I see no reason why the book or the movie should be banned, as long as the audiences are well informed about the truth. Otherwise we will have scores of people who know little or nothing about the Bible or church history swearing by the 'Code'.

What does Dan Brown stand to loose by propogating such lies? Revelations 22:18-19 has the answer...

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

hey! came in through SWB's blog.. i liked your comment on his post and so i visited!!! im a born again beleiver too and it shocked me because...people will just not obey boundaries... in any circumstance.. they will go to any extent.. to say what they want to and do what they want....people are getting out of hand in a drastic way these days....no wonder there are so many problems in the world today...

wish man would just keep his mouth shut and his eyes open a little more.

All i gotta say after your research.. Its a novel dude.. Not a research paper. And Brown definitely didn't lose anythin.Especially the Vatican's boycottin the book n movie translate to nothing but extra sales for him.And the filling coffers make him a successful writer, not his works.

    _dirtboy said...

Now, personally, i dont believe in any religious ideology, Christianity included. For me, Brown may as well be a hoax, as might John n Mattew. So, doesn't matter whether it TDVC or the Bible, both are equally books of fiction to me. And so to me, its just another 'one-novel-countermanding-another-novel's-plot' thing. Thats not very uncommon.

    _dirtboy said...

And i gotta agree.. The book isn't that great. Angels and demons makes a better read.. Wit bombs underneath the Vatican n all.. U'll like it better too.. Quite a bit of gory stuff..

hmmm...not a debate i want to get into. i liked the book coz it was entertaining and thrilling like many other books.

i kind of agree that for a person unfamiliar with christianity, it wld be a misguided introduction to the faith...maybe not for our generation since we grew up learning and reading about christianity before this book...

yet even now there are ppl out there who don't know much about the faith and they would walk away believing in these theories...in part or totally...

and for that reason, it's good to raise a debate and discuss the book with people...it helps to differentiate between fact and fiction...

i know of christians who don't want to read the book in the first place but then why? A book and some conspiracy theories won't shatter your faith and again, when u read u could help others understand what is right and what is not...

I went to my maa in law after i read the book...she was very open to read and discuss the book...and mind u she's a very devout christian...

quite the same way u've written about it...u could coz u've read the book and if i have a question about the book, u'd know what I'm talkin about right?

@Grafxgurl: Thinking about it, I feel it would have been better for the Catholic church to NOT ban the book but rather instruct people as to where and why the book is erroneous.
By banning the book, they have made it seem like the book has something that might actually shake the Church's foundations when infact its nothing more than an elaborate hoax.

All we can do is hold fast to the Truth.
Hebrews 4:12...'For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.'

@Facesmasher: You are totally right dude...It is nothing more than a novel. Tell that to the thousands of people who believe in the book blindly. Tell that to the RC Church which has banned the book. And most inportantly tell that to Dan Brown himself who has gone on record to state that the claims made in the book are not fiction but hard facts! He has the right to say whatever he wants about his book but doing so he is misleading those who are weak in their faith and doctrine.

@Ishita: The topic of the book has led to several intersting discussions and some rather heated debates for me. Thats precisely why i read the book..to find out for myself what the book has to say and help anyone who might have questions.

Any news on whether the movie has been cleared by the censors and when is the screening? I wouldnt know coz i havent read the papers today :)

Its all about religious sentiments being hurt. Something like the Satanic Verses saga which got Rushdie's rear end at the receiving end of a Fatwa....only difference is the Catholic Church gave up burning people at the stake centuries ago. If that hadnt been the case we woulda witnessed a Dan Brown Barbeque on pay-per-view! :)

Actually apart from the central theory of Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene, everything else in that book is based on fact. Read the dead sea scrolls and the gospel of Judas.

and i'd much rather believe that Jesus married Mary Magdalene. Of course the Church would want to suppress that, it gives the people a female diety and the patriarchial Church wouldn't want that. The Bible is a collection of what the Church wants you to know, and not necessarily the truth. As Dan Brown states, there were a lot mroe gospels written and most of them were destroyed by the church. And i checked up on this, and this is considered to be a very probable sceanrio.

I mean is it so hard to believe considering all that the Church has been responsible for, witch burnings, the inquisition, an absolute opposition to any pagan religions even though most of Christianity is derived from those pagan religions. Christianity is a hybrid of already existing religions, there's very little original stuff in there. but that's besides the point. The Church has always been power hungry and intolerant. and Dan Brown didn't come up with this theory, he just illustrated it. It's a premise that's often been discussed be historians.

As for hurting other people's religious sentiments, if Jesus Christ had cared about the religious sentiments of the Jews, there'd be no Christians in the world today. So go chew on that.

I love born again christians. they're almost as entertaining as orthodox Hindus.

Hi there! You really did some research to write all that. Well, I am quite a firm beliver of the lord myself however I relate a lot more to the RC church. The movie shud be seen and the book read as a work of fiction. Its not fair to shake up our own belief system for what we have been believing in for generations over something that is just another controversy. Even if all that is true, its ok by me as I continue to believe in the lord Jesus Christ whether he was married or not!! We cant ignore the other things that he did....

Just be open to crticism as much as praises, it goes for the religion we believe in as well. As its all about us - humans and thats what we are all abt.

@akansha: I read your post and i DO understand what your getting at coz i know several people who have the same view of God.
Lot of people have a general idea of what God must be like. But these views are always limiting coz they are from a human perspective and can not capture the truth about an eternal all-powerful and ever-loving God.

A verse from the Bible that is very apt...

James 2:19 "You believe that God is one, and you are quite right: evil spirits also believe this, and shudder."
Belief in God alone makes you no more holier than demons...it is the fruits of this belief that show true holiness.

@Astral: I too believe in Jesus as our Saviour but what I believe is either completely true or completely false because if you take away even a single part of His character, He no longer is the Son of God and is merely another prophet like Muhammed.

If Jesus married and had kids then He wasnt the Saviour spoken about in the O.T
If Jesus wasnt the Saviour then He wouldnt have risen again after dying on the cross.
No resurrection would mean that we would also die in our sins and not experience eternal life.
This would mean our entire Christian life is a waste of time coz we will die like regular unbelievers.

1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is empty, and your faith also is empty. 15Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we witnessed against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17and if Christ has not been raised your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.

I am open to any form of criticism be it from a Hindu,Atheist,Agnostic or any other monotheist for that matter. I know what i believe in and Im not afraid to have my beliefs questioned.

I firmly disagree with this statement. The Bible (all 66 books in it) are inspired by God and are the truth.

"As for hurting other people's religious sentiments, .....So go chew on that."
You seem to have misunderstood.. I dont agree with the Catholic church regarding banning the book. Please read my earlier comments in addition to the post.
The book has in no way hurt my religious sentiments coz I can distinguish fact from fiction.

"...The Church has always been power hungry and intolerant. "
This is the Catholic Church you are referring to and I dont belong to that Church. Im a born-again. I have read several books on the early Catholic church and their doctrines and Im quite aware of their injustice on the basis of religion.
Why believe in the Church? Believe in the Bible instead!

"....and this is considered to be a very probable sceanrio"
Its as probable as the existence of the Loch Ness monster. Several theories but no hard fact :)

    Negative Creep said...

"I firmly disagree with this statement. The Bible (all 66 books in it) are inspired by God and are the truth."

    Heh. Prove It.

If some isolated tribe found Lord Of The Rings, and could read it, they'd be worshipping Frodo and Gandalf too. I mean it's a full blown fucking mythology. Just cuz some people 2000 years ago wrote a novel, doesn't mean it's not still a novel. And that's exactly what the bible is. Fiction. Or at best, fiction based on truth, but building up a lot on it. In my opinion, it's quite possible that Christ was a political reformer and thus a political enemy of the Jews and that's all he was. not the Son of God.

As for the link with Christianity and pagan religions, here's some examples.

"Christians are summoned to communion by the ringing of bells. That was the way the Pagan Romans were called to meetings. Bells or “tintinabula” summoned Romans to the forum for public meetings, and also announced that the hot bath house was open. Christianity adopted the Pagan practice."

"The Christian holiday of Easter commemorates the crucifixion of Christ, and his rise from the dead into heaven. Then where do all the symbolism of bunnies, and eggs come from? It's more than coincedence that the early Pagans had a holiday to mark the Spring Equinox, called Ostara, usually celebrated around March 21st. With the return of spring, came the birthing of the farm animals for the year. Which is why we see bunnies, chicks, eggs and little lambs as symbols for this holiday. Part of the Ostara mythology involved the return of various deities from the underworld (symbolic of the end of winter)."

"Even non-Pagans use the term "Yule" around the Christmas holidays. Yule is celebrated on the Winter Solstice (December 22nd), on the shortest day of the year. Since the days get longer from this point in the year, Yule is a celebration of the returning sun and the rebirth of the God who died at Hallowe'en. As with Easter, the Christian story of the birth of Jesus fits nicely with the Pagan mythology of a God reborn. Traditions such as wreaths and Yule logs are remnants of the original beliefs. Gifts were exchanged at Yule long before the Wise Men offered their gifts to the baby Jesus."

Among others, read up on the similarity between Mithraism and Christianity. Jesus is nothing but a reconstruction of the pagan god-men who existed earlier including Osiris and Mithras. In fact, most, if not all events in Jesus's life can be traced back to one pagan myth or the other. Virgin birth, exorcisms, transfiguration, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, Jesus' anticipated return to judge humanity, etc. These stories were derived from Pagan material that had been circulating for centuries when Jesus was born.

As for the DVC, the Opus Dei does exist as does the Priori De sion, so did the Knighta Templar, and the Church did prosecute the order of the Knights Templar on Friday the 13th October 1307 arresting and subsequently killing and torturing hundreds of its members. This is all true, as is the other information in the book.

    and some more proof...

Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth." (Jeremiah 1:9)

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (Isaiah 40:8)

I dont expect you to believe in the above passages but you should atleast know what the Bible has to say about itself and please let us not get into the discussion of circular arguments.
I believe the Bible is the only prrof you will ever need but i doubt you believe that hence the two sites and their content.

"I mean it's a full blown fucking mythology"
I dont care if you use expletives on your own page but this is your last warning. I dont tolerate expletives on my page or in my comments section.

    Q: Dinosaurs?
Ans: Single celled amoeba are not mentioned in the bible....does that mean they dont exist??? Dodos arent mentioned either...does that mean they were never around to be extinct in the first place? Contrary to what you may think the Bible isnt an encyclopedia.
Anyway since you asked the question pls read Job 40:15-20 for an answer.

"..As for the DVC, the Opus Dei does exist...This is all true, as is the other information in the book."
I never doubted the existence of the Opus Dei. Guess what the official site of the Opus Dei has to say about the claims made in the 'Code'....read this
Apparently the Opus Dei itself refutes the claims of the book :P

"...In my opinion, it's quite possible that Christ was a political reformer"
Once again this is your opinion :) Kindy back it up with some proof (or cut paste from some random site coz thats what you seem to love doing).

"Christians are summoned to communion by the ringing of bells. That was the way the Pagan Romans were called to meetings."
Hindu's also ring bells when they enter the temple and when they perform pujas... does this mean that Hinduism derives from Roman pagan rituals or vice versa?
Its very easy to enter a search string in Google and copy paste the text from the first site you find. Dont feign intelligence using the cheapest trick in the book. That way this discussion/debate will go on indefinitely coz there are thousands of research papers on either side of the argument you have put up. Tell me, have you ever read the bible or any part thereof to actually understand what it says rather than shun it as a novel?

"..Among others, read up on the similarity between Mithraism and Christianity."
this is what I read among others...

Au Contraire, this discussion is not over. I'd love to chat on msn, but i'm afraid you wouldn't like my views on religion at all. The crux of the matter is faith. You have nothing to back up your argument that the Bible is the truth except for faith. I am not willing to make a leap of faith based on what is written in a book written 2000 years ago, when there were no means of actually verifying the truth of this statement. If i go around claiming that David Koresh was the reincarnation of Jesus, as a lot of his followers believed, what makes that false yet the Bible true? Just because the Bible was written 2000 years ago? Why are there so many ancient gods, and no modern ones? Have gods forsaken the earth, or is it just that maybe, it's not that easy to fool people now becauise of the skepticism and better means of communication.

    Switchblade said...

"You have nothing to back up your argument that the Bible is the truth except for faith."
If you arent willing to put your faith in God then tell me what do you put your faith in? I would like to know so I could understand your standpoint on this issue a little more clearly.
I believe in the Bible because I have faith in it and this faith comes from God. But for those who are sceptical there is proof that the Bible and its contents are unaltered since the beginning. But in the end it does come down to faith whether you believe that it was a man's thoughts written in a book or God's inspired words penned down by human hands.Guess we both agree on that atleast :)

"..but i'm afraid you wouldn't like my views on religion at all."
Me not liking your views does not make any difference to our discussion here or anywhere else. Similarly Im sure you arent too happy about my views either.

"Why are there so many ancient gods, and no modern ones?"
I really dont know if new Gods are being created and worshipped every day or not. I know and believe in One God who was there before time began and who will be htere when time ends.
As for modern day Gods....Michael Jackson was worshipped in his heyday and as you already know many south indian actors have temples erected in their names(!) Their followers may not have any religious texts to go by but they are worshipped still.

And regarding David Koresh..its crazy to believe that anyone could be the reincarnation of Jesus coz the work which Jesus came to do on earth is over. Why would He need to come as human again.
Bible says He has joined the Father in heaven once and for all. See...it doenst take much hard fact to poo-poo such nonsense...just some common sense!

I had some serious reservation about people creating a ruckus over the fact that Jesus married and asking for banning the movie citing the reason that Jesus marrying is blasphemous. But your words clear my mind, that christianity does not stand against marriage and that it`s just that Jesus did not marry in order to save the world first.

Thanks for having enlightened me, buddy

    Regards,
    Srijith.

hello people once again there is a lot of negativity created from the movie. ITs alright actually the movie is bad. It wont effect anyone the movie will be just a summer box office hit. we need to stand by our beliefs and thats it. Its up to people to change their perceptions of this world. Evolution is a good thing for some to live with. So let us not disown them. Jesus is god there is no denying that for them. We cant change perceptions. The world wont be a beautiful if there is no diversity.

We should keep our stand intact even though we falter at times. Its simple this is what makes human.

Extremism is an option. It should not dictate the way we live thats all im saying. Thank you for listening.

    alrighty now... NEW POST!!!

people arent going to beleive...they want to SEE..to believe.. thats how short a distance they really see upto.

its like a disease....its spreading....this entire unbelief and constant searching for new fangled "exciting, "OOOHHHH", ethereal experience" kinda "religion"... so they dont want to have anything to do with us so called " boring" beleivers....

when things are so simply stated....people dont want to simply beleive... they feel its an insult to their intelligence...... they feel they need someone and something more stimulating... to actually feel like theyre getting their" faith's worth".....

thats when you know man thinks he is greater than God...

    This is to thadicaran's comment...
"What would people say if they hear that Im a Jesus Freak,
What would people do if they find out its true.
I dont really care if they label me a Jesus Freak,
there aint no disguising the truth!"

The truth what is it but just what one sees. It defines ones lifestyle. I understand that but its not a freak it admonishes the truth you follow. We have to stop using euphemisms to address god. To be a true believer we just need to believe in God which is love itself. So love ya roy
